I just wanted to pass this along for those who are looking for a quick way to install Gentoo & have a bootable desktop within an hour I used the Gentoo graphical installer based on Anaconda (http://gentoo.vidalinux.com/?q=node/view/35)

This package allows you to do a stage 3 install, and this is the first time I have been able to have a bootable gentoo system, without allot of time spent checking & doubble checking everything I typed;) ( call me lazy if you want ) when the install is finished there is still allot of configuration that still needs to be done, but this is part of using and learing about Gentoo IMHO, I am still setting up my system and updating things, but I think and Hope I am going to be happy with Gentoo :D

interesting... Im running on a stage one install right now, but for my laptop this would be great. I want emerge capabilities, but I don't want to spend days compiling.

Also very good for slower systems when you're too lazy to install a stage 3 from a cli
Thanks :)

edit:

this talks about using rpms... can u still use emerge?

Your welcome pezplaya:D the RPM"S are just used for the base install there are a total of like 9 packages installed via Anaconda and then the portage does the rest of the install from the net I was able to setup my whole system via one CD I was able to select graphical login and I was dropped into GDM/GNOME upon rebooting. and then I have had to do everthing else the Gentoo Way :D

You will be ver happy with Gentoo, I know it. Even with precompiled packages, it still has to roar. I love this distro! lol :D ;)

here goes
emerge -K will install a banairysp? package say like OO correct? how do I point portage to a package I have downloded to my system? or to a package on a FTP site or server?

Thanks

The first one is for Athlon XP's.

Is it that you are not familiar with bittorrent files and downloads? I wasn't either until a couple of weeks ago as a JL member PM'd me urls to download some iso's and lo and behold they were .bittorrent files. I found the only way to download this particular distro (until I could purchase the retail package) was to use a bittorrent client (Azureus).

I installed Azureus (couldn't get the regular Bittorrent package to work), downloaded the .torrent file, opened that file in Azureus and the iso was then downloaded.

Have a search for 'bittorrent' and/or 'azureus' at www.google.com/linux to learn more on how they work.

Dorza,

if you do not want to use a torrent to download the latest Athlon .iso you can use this mirror http://gentooinstaller.kicks-***.net/gentoo-anaconda/ be sure to use the first link for the 1.1 althon XP ISO in order to get the URL to work replace the *** with another name for donkey;) the forum software would not let me post the whole URL sorry

HTH:)

to the mods, or anyone else sorry for the "naughty word in the URL:o:)
