I took back my other laptop and got a better one. It's a Pavillion zv5120us (zv5000). Im not sure exactly what the sound card is but yast say's is a Hewlett-Packard Company Mutimedia audio controller.. What ever that is..
Suse loaded the AC'97 Audio Codec. I can open XMMS and play mp3's but I get no sound, and opening a volume control program says there is no sound card configured.

When I try and configure the soundcard with yast it says that its am ATI Technologies Inc.. Anyway when I try and configure it, it says that the kernel module snd-attiixp for sound support could not be loaded.

Anyone have some ideas??

Please stand by for the standard sound trouble shooting questions.

1. Post the output of lspci.

2. Post the output of lsmod

3. Did you search the forum for answers? There are millions of bytes of information stored in this forum for trouble shooting sound. (I think I've responded first to many of the new ones).

4. Sacrifice a live chicken to the voodoo god Da`Gomba. The patron of unknown sound in linux. ok so this one is a joke.

EDIT
-----------------

5. Can you set the bios to non pnp os? Linux doesn't use pnp so disable it.

end edit

I have searched the forums, but came up empty. I also searched google/linux/ and groups. Seems allot of people have problems with 3d acceleration but that's next on my list. The live chicken idea is becoming more and more tempting.

OK well all the correct modules are loaded. The ones prefixed with snd- are all sound modules.

did you unmute?

what are the permissions on /dev/dsp

I forgot to ask in my original post about pnp os. it should be off as linux doesn't use pnp. You answered before I could edit it.

/dev/dsp:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 2004-06-01 10:17 dsp -> dsp0

Sound is not muted as far as I can tell. Kmix has a red X over the volume control and when I click on it, it asks what mixer but there are no choices.

Not sure about the pnp thing. How do I check that?

What version of SuSE are you using? Ive noticed in 9.1 Pro that sometimes sound will randomly go out (regardless of brand of sound card. Seen this with Audigy, 5.1 onboard, and stereo onboard). All I ever had to do was go into Yast and remove and add the soundcard. It would go out again a week or so later, but the same solution.

I'm running suse 9.1 pro. I tried that but it did not make any difference. I also tried alsoconf which normally works with my sound blaster on my desktop but does not help here..

I found out the lastest a lastest (Well from feb 29th) now have support for my soundcard. I downloaded and installed everything I needed to, and now I have mixer support, but I still have no sound! I get the same thing when I try and configure my soundcard with yast; the kernel not being able to load the snd-atiixp sound module error. I unmuted everything as alsa is muted by default and still nothing. I can play mp3's but cannot hear anything. The only thing that has changed is that now I can here beeps which I did not hear before.

My laptop used to have windows installed and sound worked there, so it's not that the card does not work. I am at a loss here.

Edit: I just ran alsaconf and I played the sample and I heard it! But when I tried to play an mp3, I get nothing. In alsamixer when I ajust the volume I can hear little cracking noises though. At least I'm getting somewhere.
If anyone has any more advice I would seriously appreciated it.

May it has something to with that fact that I load with runlevel 3? I had problems with my keyboard on my last laptop loading directly into X so I just set level 3 for this one too. I don't think this would effect anything, but perhaps someone knows.

Nope nothing to do with the run level.

Check the settings in XMMS. Make sure you are using the right output plugin. Not sure what plugins you have loaded, but if you are running alsa you should be able to use the oss driver plugin as alsa has support for oss. If that doesn't work just try all of them. Well except the disk writer one. That will just wite the mp3 to disk as a wav.

Thank you!!! I selected to oss driver in XMMS and it worked! Ahh the sweet sound of the stones...

You wouldn't happen to know how I might get my 'special' keys to work under Linux would you? Like the ones for volume, www, and so forth?

Eitherway, I am happy now. 3D acceleration can wait for another day. :)

Thanks again!

Ok now that you are rockin out to the classics.

Your 3d problem and special keys will require a search. You might find something in the forum. Start by looking for the type of card you have. If it's a Nvidia card just go to the nvidia site and get the driver and read (and I mean all of it) the README that nvidia provides. It's well documented on how to get it going.

ATI cards well. Search the forum for answers. I like my nvidia cards.

Yeah it's a ATI Mobile Radeon 9000 IGP. From what I have read so far I'm going to have to recompile the kernel... A daunting task that I have never done before. I have allot of reading ahead me. I still have not found the drivers for it. One site says to get them from suse.com and another says get them from ati.com. Can't find them on suse.com, and ATI says to check my vender website.

Well either way, a forum search is coming up next. Thanks again for all your help.
