make my make

i have a serious problem that pops up almost all the times i try to install a tar ball.
the make doent work for some reason or the other.
sometimes everythng works but i dont get to see the executable program binary which actually is supposed to run.its just not there.whereis fails becasuse its really not there.
pliss guide..what cud be the reason for make failure whcih says no target blah blah and why the executable not there when everything was fine.
pliss answer elaborately....i am in pain.

where did you look for the program?
did you
make install?

ya i did infact in frustation looked for it in virtually the entire hdd.
./configure worked fine.
but the problem is with make and make install
pliss elaborate help wud be appreciated.
probable reasons and solutions for the make failure.
and where the hell the executable program goes
