I really want to stick a nix distro on my laptop, but am unsure as to whether any are a simple install, so if any of you could advise I would be very grateful.

i hear SuSe is a good laptop distro, since Linux can be downloaded free i would try the three easy distros like Redhat, Mandrake & SuSe and see which one works best on your lappy...

for a RPM based distro i prefer Redhat7.1, my other favorite is Slackware8...

I put mandrake 8.1 on my dell laptop. It is a bit of a pain to get X working, but it's not too hard. I hear that it's pretty easy if you have an inspiron with an ATI video card, not an NVidia like me.

linux on laptops (http://www.linux-laptop.net/) is a good resource - especially for X configuration.

I personally like SuSE

Debian went on easily to my Compaq Armada.

Laptop is just a PC with pcmcia attached.
It comes down to video chipset, sound chip and a modem.

Read the PCMCIA supported cards list to pick your pcmcia cards. This should make your configuration very easy.

Good Luck,

painful for me, couldn't get dual boot working, something to do with Dell suspend to disk and partitioning. Gave up, partly because WINxp is ok, partly because I didn't want to fool with it anymore, I still have my main at home puter as slack though.

Has anybody heard if Mandrake 8.x and IBM Thinkpad 380XD is a bad couple?

I heard that MDK have some problems with this notebook.

This one is on Suse though. Don't see why you'd have problems on it. If it's hardware problem, try upgrading to the current kernel and see if that fixes things.
