Hi friends:

Can anyone tell me what is "netfilter". .I was doing some reading about ipchains, and apparently, it's recommended to use the "netfilter" method instead. I've been using ipcahins, up until I've installed Mandrake beta 1 ver. 8. ..which uses kernel 2.4.2 It's claimed that ipchains is not properly supported in the new 2.4.x kernel.

ipchains are still supported in 2.4.2, but can be replaced by netfilter. Typically, netfilter is a better choice if your box is a router or a firewall. If not, ipchains is probably what you want.

Thanks Tyr. ..I found out about it after I posted. It would seem, that it's not something discussed a whole lot in the Linux community. I'm having a heck of a time getting ipchains to behave properly for me in Drake 8, however. Perhaps I;ll have to re-write the entire rc.local file. LOL . . . I've been using pretty much the same one since a year or more; that is to say, in various distrobutions and kernels. I'm really taking a liking to this new Mandrake, and I fully plan on keeping it. I'd like to get a firewall running. I downloaded the tar.gz of the newest iptables & "netfilter" that I could find. I did the neccessary configure/make/make install. ..but it tells me that it's not currently supported in the kernel.. .lol. ..Uhnn Unngh. ..I ain't co mpiled no kernel before, and I would just as soon learn some more before I fudge up my Linux install.. .
