Okay here's my setup. I have a 20 gig hard drive. I have three 3 gig partions for my installed Windows 2000 OS and I want to use the rest for RH7.1. When I install Red Hat it says that it can't automatically partition my drive because there is not enough free space so I have to do it manually. No big deal. Well, I set up my /home, swap and / partition. But, when I try to setup my /boot partition it tells me that it can't allocate it because it goes above the 1024 cylinder limit. I tried skipping the /boot partition and just left the / partition but I get the same error. Is there any way around this? Thanks so much for your help.

well, because your windows partition occupies the 1024 cylinder you will have a problem without using a bootdisk...i have the same setup...except i have windows using a lil more space.

this is how your diskdrake info should look:

hda1 - windows - 3 gig
hda5 - swap "swap" - 128mb
hda5 - linux "/" - rest

that is the way you should set it up....later try installing grub if you want a good bootloader...if you get tired of using the floppy.

Cool! I suppose I could do that. Here's the only thing I don't understand: Before I ever messed with Red Hat, I used SuSE 7.1. What I would do is set up my Windows partions and leave free space for Linux. I installed Windows first and then I would install SuSE. SuSE would give the option to use the free space at the end of the drive and automatically partition it. It would also install lilo to the boot sector of my drive so I didn't have to boot off a floppy. Does Red Hat just have a different way of doing things?

Hmm... I guess the workaround is to have a separate /boot partition before the 1024th cylinder (abt 8G)

I have also wondered about this myself because the version of lilo should have already overcome the 1024th cylinder limitation.

And, I believe that the RH installation provides a option either to install lilo or not to install lilo. And you can choose to install lilo to the mbr or the first sector of your boot partition.

Sorrie... have not touched RH for some time. Hope this helps.
