I've just installed the Official version of MDK 10.0. I went to Printerdrake and selected "Auto-detect printers connected to machines running Microsoft Windows". It said "No printer found". I then tried to turn on the Expert Mode option before I tried to add a new printer. I'm not sure what to put for "SMB server host", "SMB server IP", "Share name", "User name", "Password", "Workgroup".

Thanks in advance.

SMB server host=computer name
SMB server IP= 192.168.0.*
Share name= teh name of the printer under printers in windows.
User name= the login name for the win machine
Password=password of win user
Workgroup= in windows usually MSHOME.

SMB server host: would that be the computer i'm on or the windows computer?
SMB serer IP:do I enter as you've written or the ip of the computer that's connected to the printer?

Username:what if there's no login to the win machine?

I've only setup Samba once and that was a few years ago, so since nobody else has replied in a while, I'll give it a try.

I would think the server host would be the Windows hostname and the ip address from the same.

What do you mean by 'no login to the win machine'?

Do you need to have file/print sharing enabled on Windows?

If not already, I would suggest you read all you can on Samba from the documentation installed with the Samba packages and also whatever you can find at www.samba.org ( I think that's correct ).

#1 Yes
#2 the ip of the computer thats connected to the printer
#3 is this win 9x or nt,2k,xp.
on the win machine you have to share the printer for MDK to be able to see it. right click on the printer icon and select sharing. then enable sharing by selecting the checkbox share as. It will tell you the name of the printer.

I've set the printer to share already in XP andIi've filled everything as people have suggested but I still couldn't get it to work. Is there anything else that I should be aware of?

in win xp start->networkconnection->show all connections right click on lan->properties select the last tab and unselect protect my comp. the win firewall is either on or off no middleground to let certain connections thru. you will have to disable it.

by the way what printer do you have.

This is still something I'm working through myself with FC2... definately disable the XP to get it to work but you'll also have to set up the MDK10 firewall to accept connection from the XP box...

The XP firewall is always disabled. I suppose the next thing is to figure out how firewall settings on mdk.

I have an old HP Laser 4P.

I didn't know there's such a thing...but I followed the instruction on this page (http://please.rutgers.edu/show/howto/AddingLPRport/). Tried it again but didn't work :(
