I know NOTHING about Linux (I'm just a dumb PM), so please don't slam me for this question....
Is there such a thing as a Linux emulator? I'm running Windows at home, and need to "unzip" a tarball to print some text files from it... is there any way to do it from Windows or with some utility?

yes, there are windows programs to unzip linux compressed files, a search on download.com shows these
GodeZip 2000 (http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10097-100-2826387.html?tag=st.dl.10001-103-1.lst-7-1.2826387) for one, if that doesn't suit you, do a search there for tar or unzip, etc
good luck!
ps what is a PM??

Also, winzip will unzip tar and gz files (as well as any other compressed format (almost))
Its nagware, but its not too naggy and you can use it after the trial period is up

As suggested by Derango, Winzip 8 would probably be your best bet. Supports quite a few formats.
