Hey, just wanted to pass the word about the new UT2003/2004 mod "Red Orchestra"!!!

This is the best game I have played in a long time, and it is sooooo addictive! Whats cool though is I get about 55-80 FPS at 1280x1024 resolution, while I am in Linux...but when I boot into Windoz I can about 30 FPS less at the same res! LOL!!!

Heres the homepage, screenshots, and download links!!!

http://redorchestramod.gameservers.net/

Also the game is so simple to install! If your new to Linux or for anyone thats confused on how to do this, just login as "root" and...

Download the full install.

Unzip the full install. (if your using something like KDE or Gnome, just right-click on the file and select "Uncompress Contents" etc.)

Copy the "Red Orchestra" directory, and the contents of the "Sytem" folder over to your /usr/local/games/ut2004 (or wherever you install ut2004).

Now just Logout as Root, and login to your personal user account. From the command line type "ut2004 -mod=RedOrchestra", or create a simple desktop icon to do this for you! :)

Also I don't know if anyone knows this (I just found out)... All UT2003/2004 mods are 100% compatable with Linux, even when they are developed on Windoz machines! The ONLY thing is the Windoz users have to remember to use correct syntax when writing code (caps-lower case), because Linux is case sensative while windoz isn't.

Since UT 2003/2004 mods are supported under Linux...here are some links to currrent mods that provide Linux binary downloads!!

Plus if you just want to search all the available mods for UT2003 go here!

(just select the game UT2003/2004 from the drop down list when your refining your search).

Also another really great game I have been playing on Linux is Savage (http://www.s2games.com)! This game is an original and fun, fast-paced game! Savage is great merging of RTS and FPS, and install/plays easily under Linux. Also the new version 2.0 has a ton of new features, plus the new game is only $20.00! So check it out!!

Well good luck! And I hope to see you online!!

love it too, just one draw back that it doesn't have aiming crosshair :(
come on, even in reality that people needs pivot to aim, how can I just hold a gun and shoot right off
the reasons that I don't play it much is because there are only less than 10 servers available  , not enough players to rock, eh.
compared to DoD, there are like thousands...

Try Soeldner (beta 2) too, it's great :p

Try Soeldner (beta 2) too, it's great :p Think counter-strike with the steryl scout thingy (the weak sniper rifle). Piles of people would learn how to aim that thing without a crosshair. It gets fairly easy after a while.. :)

 , it's not harder than ak47 without crosshair :D

Yes it is... the Scout is effectively single-shot! At least, it is once people are close enough to need to forego the sniper scope...

;)

However, you can do some pretty good damage with the Scout if you can get a headshot -- and not too many people can hear you, either. Contrast the AWP/AWM/whatever you want to call it today, where you can (or at least, could -- I haven't played in too long) hear a shot across the map... ;)

Yeah, I love the Scout to from my CS days! I was so fun to just run around and see how many people you could kill with headshots!

I do have to admit though, that my friends were much better at the Scout then I was. My best weapon was the AK! LOL!!!

K, I think your a little confused here.... Red Orchestra 1.2 for UT 2003 usually only had about 10 servers running, and didn't have a lot of online players, mainly because UT 2004 was out etc...

But Red Orchestra 2.0 is a full UT 2004 Mod release. and includes new models and and weapons, including the newly introduced Machine Guns!!!

Also the game mechanics and recoils have been improved. And they have fixed it so you can't cheat and put a piece of "tape" in the middle of your screen to simulate a crosshair!

Red Orchestra 2.0 for UT2004 has a huge breakout following and was even posted on Slashdot.org upon its release date on 5-21-04! Since its release there have been around 80-100 servers running, and at least 120+ people constantly online in just its initial week!

So I think you may have ver 1.2 for UT2003, confused with the new 2.0 for UT2004!!! I would definitely check out the new release if you haven't done so alreay! :)

As for the complaints about free-aiming. I think its the coolest thing ever! The guns and sound effects are so realitic in 2.0 that I couldn't imagine playing the game any other way!... Besides, I can spray-and-pray just fine with my hip shootin skills on RO. Everyone in the game has the same disadvantage so its OK! If you really don't like the feel of no crosshairs theirs always other similar mods for Linux like Enemy Territory (http://games.activision.com/games/wolfenstein/), which is also a free download for the full game! (however I personally think its not nearly as good a this mod!)

Well also don't forget to keep a lookout for the next release from our friends at Red Orchesta... Since they are using UT 2004 they should start having some vehicles out with the next installation later this year! A game like that could really help boost Linux gaming community and support! Plus its free!!!

I think you are right about that, I thought the RO UT2003/2004 Mod were both the same, and I got the game a while ago, yep, it's 1.2 beta :D didin't know 2.0 was out already eh.

does RO 2.0 work on UT2004 demo version? :(

p.s. Beetlejuice321, go gophers ;)

LOL! Hey, cool I didn't know you were in MN! Sweet! :)

Well, to answer your question...RO 2.0 does not work with the demo. But I think the game is only about $35.00 right now, so not a bad investment if you consider all the game mods you can play in Linux (including the full version of UT 2004!).

But if your like me and a student, you have to actually "budget " for even that small of an amount! LOL!!! But its definitely worth it!

There are a lot of really cool and crazy upcoming mods for UT 2004, like this balloon combat one called Air Buccaneers (http://ludocraft.oulu.fi/airbuccaneers/), Duffs Golf (http://duffers.beyondunreal.com/). But I don't know if these developers are supporting Linux users like the other mods I mentioned are...but hopefully! :)

Oh BTW I also just read that Doom III (http://doom3.com/) has officially announced a full Linux port of the game (just like UT 2003/2004). John Carmack said that "id" has been developing a Linux version right alongside the Windows port! Hmmm...even more great Linux games! Its about time!!!

It does look like a great mod, but I'm still struggling with getting Deathball (http://deathball.net/) working with UT2004

The way UT2004 handles mods makes them very universal with the OSes. Just ut2004 -mod=modname :)

I'm waiting for the next release of Deathball since the UT2004 patch seems to of caused some problems (on Windows machines)

Looks like they put out the next release on the 24th...I'll have to try it later :D

I mentioned the game Soldner (http://soldner.jowood.com/), but nobody responds to it, :o
just so I'd provide the link, so you can take a look, not a linux port but the demo is free :D, another game that I''ve been having a hang of it..

yet another fps great game added some c&c taste to it (you can also blow up places with apache long-bow or F-22 raptor..., needless to say ;)

 me in St.Anthony, Minneapolis:eek:
