I want to start playing some Loki games, like Quake III, Soldier of Fortune, etc...

I have an SiS C86201 2d/3d chip, but I think it really sucks, I tried playing soldier of fortune demo. So, can anyone recommend a good 3d card I should consider? Pls keep in mind of the price, maybe mid range. Also, my system is an amd k6-2, 500mhz with 184mb of ram. Would that be enough to run those games I mentioned?

The very best budget gaming cards out there are the Geforce2MX cards, at anywhere from $120 to $150 or so. Don't let the price fool you either...they're plenty fast. Just look for the GeForce2MX chipset.

I bought a Geforce2 MX for under a hundred bucks. It's a 32 meg card and with the new Nvidia drivers it really works well.
I have several Loki games and the frame rates are excellent.

Absolutely. I switched from a Voodoo 3 to the GeForce 2 card and it's an amazing thing. Easy to setup 3d support, works beautifully. Prices are headed down on the GeForce 2 cards as well, with the GeForce 3 available (around $600. USD)

Does it matter what version of Xfree86 I have? I have 2.2.x Does it require 4.0?

generaly, any newer video card will requre at least Xfree 3.3.x for 3d Support. If you're going to be playing games through linux, then you definitly need to upgrade that.

To use the Nvidia based chipsets with 3d, you need at least x11 4.0.1
