when I try to join the samba domain I get the following error:
domain "lupus.be"
The credentials supplied conflicts with an existing set of credentials.

joining the workgroup works fine

so win2k works with the workgroup but not with the domain

I don't understand his problem

logging in the domain from win95b works fine (with encrypted password)

The SMB protocol Win2K uses is a bit diferent than previous versions. Versions of SAMBA up to 2.2.0 will not let a Win2K box do a domain login.
SAMBA 2.2.1(and newer, if there is anything newer) overcomes this problem.

I had the same problem. The only way I could fix this is to add the root user's entry in smbpasswd, and use the root account details to join the computer to the domain.

I believe that this is a win2k problem. I have that error all the time when using unc paths at work, using \\computer\daroot. I always have to substitute the ip of the machine I am trying to connect to. Just a thought.
