I am runnig MDK 8.1, and I instaleld WINE off of the CDs that I downloaded from Mandrake. All of the NHF's I have found have assumed a config file located at /etc/wine.conf unfortuanetly I dont have such a file.
I have a 20 gig MSDOS parition I have succesuflly formatted and mounted but I cant anything to work on it.
I am hoping to be able to install an OS preferably win2k on the msdos parition and use the win2k OS through wine, is this possible? If so how do I install the OS in a manner that Linux recognizes it?
Thanks guys/gals...

Alot of HOWTOs will assume you have a certain configuration, you just need to take the time to look around and find the correct config on your own system. You might find the config files under /etc/wine/ or /usr/lib/wine/ or someplace else altogether. The point is most installations and distros are different, so look for the appopriate files on yours. Most of the time you'll be using a config file in your home directory anyway ( ~/wine.conf ).

What do you mean by this? Be more specific.

If you were to install W2K, it would wipe the partition out and create its own anyway, no use creating one for it. From experience with Wine, I can tell you that the best Windows version to run for compatibilities sake is 95/98.

The only reason I wonder about the config file is that when I tried the NHF on this site I kept getting errors that said the config file couldnt be found.
I have a 20 gig hard drive formatted as msdos. The reason I mention that it's mounted and working properly is because that's one of the first things the NHF requires...that you have a msdos parition which is mounted and you are able to rw to it.
Windows 98 would be fine, my question is can I install Win98 from within LInux or do I need to install Win98 myself via a bootdisk. If the latter is the case, dont I run the risk of overwriting the bootloader?
Thanks

remove it, and download codeweavers wine: http://www.codeweavers.com/technology/wine/
than run winesetup, and it will ask you some stuff like if you have a windows partition, or a fake windows dir, which windows look you want to emulate, etc. than your can run your stuff with
wine /mnt/windows/foo.exe
or with gmc, nautilus & konqueror you can simpl click on .exe's, it's really easy.
i had 2 problems with it, and they were both easy to solve.

I removed the previous version of wine and installed codeweavers, however I am still getting errors concerning configuration:
[jason@badabing test]$ wine arachnid.exe
Warning:
The Wine launcher is unable to find xmessage.
This launcher script relies heavily on finding this tool,
and without it, it will behave poorly.
Most Linux distributions have one or the other of these
tools.
We strongly recommend that you use your distribution's
software methods to locate xmessage.
Invoking /opt/wine/bin/wine.bin arachnid.exe ...
/usr/bin/wine: -timeout: command not found
Invalid path 'C:\Windows' for windows directory: does not exist
Perhaps you have not properly edited or created your Wine configuration file.
This is (supposed to be) '/home/jason/.wine/config'
Wine failed with return code 1
/usr/bin/wine: -title: command not found
Part of the error says invalid path c:\windows, do I need to have windows installed? I dont currently, I thought wine would still let me run apps without windows installed?
How can I install windows and not worry about blowing out the boot loader?

uh? what a question
anyway, in fact you don't need to..
do 2 things:
1. install xmessage
2. your path to windows is NOT c:\windows, it's probably /home/jason/fakewindowsdir.
make the dir /home/jason/fakewindowsdir, and put your arachnid.exe in tha dir.
than, it should work...

I know that looks bad doesnt it?
I guess my question should have been phrased..."Is there anything I need to be consious of when installing windows to be used in WINW?"

I am having trouble finding xmessage, I dont see it anywhere in the software manager. Is this something that is used by Codeweaver for Gnome integration?
Okay, so if I dont install windows I will be able to install applications to my dos partition? At the tail end of the error I see this message...
Gnome integration does not work under Mandrake. If you have removed the Mandrake
menu system and are confident it will work, edit /usr/bin/winesetup and remove this test.
What does it mean to remove the Mandrake menu system?

no, it's that when you start an app, it will pop up a msg to tell you it's trying to start it. when it fails, it will pop up a message to tell you it failed. that's what it does. ow, and it's not on the mandrake cds, but you can find it on rpmfind.net, and you will not have any dependancies normally
Okay, so if I dont install windows I will be able to install applications to my dos partition? why do you have a dos partition
i suppose it works, but the easiest way is to put it in $home/fakewindows or whatever you want to call it, and yes you will be able to install them. NOTE: don't start to many apps at the same time with it, 'cause than the last one will probably crash...

it's just that it doesn't put winestuff in your gnome menus with mandrake, but with kde it does..; never mind, that's just a dumb msg, i did had my wine stuff in my gnome menus.
once you have it working, and you click on a .exe with konqueror (all the .exe's will have the icon of a glass of wine), it will ask you with what you want to run it. type wine of course. there's a checkbox below that dialog, which you can check if 'you always want to use that program for such filetypes' or something like that, DON'T check it, since it will not work anymore. at least, it didn't worked with me anymore. you can still undo that in tools -> configure koqueror -> filebrowser -> filetypes or something like that.
