Hello all. Im trying to install SuSE 9.0 Personal on a Dell Precision 610 Workstation. I boot to the CD and configure an FTP install from a mirror and after that, choose all packages and I come back about 2 hours later to a blank screen. I rebooted the box and the SuSE splash screen appears where it says "Linux" "Floppy" etc etc. I choose linux and then it dies.

Hardware is:

Dell Precision 610
AIC-7890 SCSI controller
2 16.9 GB Seagate Cheetah HD's
32MB Diamond Viper 770 TNT2 card.
Netgear Gigabit NIC

I think it has something to do with the way I partitioned the box.
SDA
100MB for /boot
1GB for SWAP
15.8GB for /

SDB
16.9GB for /USR

Can you tell me if this is right or make suggestions on what it should be. Im trying to run a MySQL database and WebCall ticket tracking system on this box.

Please help

I just finished my second in as many days, SuSE 9.0 ftp installs on my spare laptop around a hour ago and did not have any problems with either (rescue/prod) of the installs.

The laptop does not have a internal cdrom and there must be something wrong with the USB port as both SuSE and XP installs lockup after trying to use a few of my external USB cdr's/cdrw's. Had to resort to ftp instead at least for SuSE.

You will never know where the install fails unless you stick around during the package installation or other process.

not so sure it fails......I think the partition is off. I have installed SuSE 9.0 successfully on 2 laptops in the past month or so with no problems but I accepted their partition scheme. What do you think. I noticed in theirs...they had no /boot partition. Is this correct.

If the installer finds a empty primary Linux filesystem partition, I believe it will suggest using /boot. If you have not as yet pre-partitioned, then I don't think the installer will default to having a separate /boot partition. I always select 'custom partitioning' myself.

After the packages have been selected and installed, the installer should have stopped while it waited for input on the next step. Does it do a mini boot after the package installation? Shows what my memory is like as I just did the second ftp install this morning.
