What mirrors (meaning what country) do you use when the ones in North America are down? I found it kind of funny that I got a constant 150KB connection from the Czeck Republic and Australia than what I got in the States and Canada.

I'm not sure if I've ever gotten less than 100KB/s from a foreign mirror. I always expect them to be no good, but it's either like they don't respond at all, or the connection is great. :D

since there is T5 fibre optic lines from new jersey to england, i always find the uk sites as fast or faster than north america.
do you know, the fastest line from here to boston is T1. and the fastest line to the pacific coast is T3?
the fastest line across the hudson to new york city is T4, a grand total of 7 miles from my house!
from here many european sites are "closer" than america.

Well, the only good thing about dialup is that you pretty much can expect 3-5 kb/s everywhere (except ftp.slackware.com when an update comes out :) ).

Well, I always do use the local mirrors. :) The two closest mirrors to my place are in Zurich and Solothurn:
http://mirror.switch.ch/mirror.html/
ftp://ftp.solnet.ch/mirror/
I can especially recommend the SWITCH mirror as the SWITCH consortium has an academic background and always a full cashbox as they sell all *.ch domains, thus they invest a lot into hardware. As you can see in their mirrorlist, you can find pretty much everything there. :)
