gateway box ?

well , I thought of putting a firewall/gateway/server box between my DSL router and hub, and openning all ports in DSL router ... so , got a question , what's the best disrto, how would I do gateway , what's the best firewall that don't need to run independently (I already asked it in another thread, but just to make sure ;) )
