After I installed and compiled the 2.6.5 kernel I cannot connect to the internet anymore. I cannot post my logs now but I have seen there is prophably something with "usb urd" and "usbcore"
Does someone know what I should include in the kernel to get rid of these errors?
I have included usb-uhci, usb-ohci and usb-ehci if that matters.
I'm on Gentoo and use the Alcatel Speedtouch modem.
Thanks!

Is there anything else that is not working properly? Have you upgraded from a 2.4 kernel, and, if so, did you install the new modutils package?

Yes I upgraded from a 2.4 kernel, and I didn't install modutils I believe, but I compiled some new module options in the kernel, for example a new option to unload modules.

Everything else seems to work fine b.t.w.

You will need the new version of modutils for everything to work properly.

Thought so. I will let you know if it works.

Any luck with the installation of the module-init-tools package? That is one of main requirements for the 2.6 kernel.

I haven't tried installing it yet because I am using some hardware from the pc on another pc where I'm installing Gentoo on, so I cannot use it now.
I'll let you know how it goes when I can use it again.

When you do try to install it, here are some good directions:
However, make ABSOLUTELY SURE you ONLY run make moveold ONCE, EVER. If you ever run it again, you will lose the ability to load modules under a 2.4 kernel.
Also note that while that bug says the current version is 0.9.12, the real current version is closer to 3.0.

I haven't installed it yet, but I'm on Gentoo, so I think I only should do "emerge modutils" and everything will be automaticly compiled and installed for me.

Since modutils is the package name for the 2.4 kernel, should you not be emerging 'module-init-tools'?

Ow thanks mdwatts, installed it now.

I have no idea what those errors mean as I'm in no way a kernel developer or even a programmer.
Are any modules loaded?
Did you follow these instructions for module-init-tools?
This package is an add/on or replacement for modutils for .ko-type kernel modules.
Commands used to build are:
./configure --prefix=/ (install to /sbin & /bin)
make moveold (backs up old modutils binaries)
make
make install
./generate-modprobe.conf /etc/modprobe.conf
Just adding this in because of some of the recent discussion regarding
preparation for 2.6 by adding in this package.
Saved that from another thread here at JL of which apparently you are only to execute 'make moveold' once.
Perhaps post the USB relevant sections from your kernel .config so we can have a look.
Another suggestion would be to search the kernel mailing lists for some of those error messages.

I am still working on the problem, but I haven't much time. But you have pointed me in the right direction. I have found a topic about the Speedtouch on Gentoo, on the Gentoo board. I let you know how it goes.
This series of atricles should be able to help you.

Finaly!
I have a internet connection. Here's a topic that pointed me in the right direction and should help others in setting everything up for the Speedtouch USB modem:
