Installing Fonts

Hello,

Nagging question here:
How do I install extra fonts on to my Redhat 7 box for use in applications such as Gimp ?

I have attempted to copy font files I have donwloaded to the /usr/local/fonts directory but have no idea where to go from here ?

Any idea ?

I dont know if you can use this for things apps, but for netscape you can..
