Don't know if this will help. Had saved it for future reference.

When you first install XMMS 1.2.x (the latest version is 1.2.4), notice that your desktop sounds disappear when you play your favorite tunes. Fortunately for you, especially if you're a sound junkie like myself, there is an easy resolution to this little problem. You'll need to access your preferences for XMMS, which can be done with your mouse or keyboard. Using the mouse, right click the main XMMS player window and put your cursor on Options, which will open another menu. At the top of the Options menu, you'll find Preferences. To open the Preferences window with the keyboard, just hit "Crtl-P."

Once you have the Preferences window opened, you will see under the Audio I/O Plugins tab, the Output Plugin window. If the button within this window reads "OSS Driver 1.2.x [libOSS.so]," then click the button with your mouse cursor and change the Output Plugin to the "eSound Output Plugin 1.2.x." This driver will share your sound output device so that both your MP3s and desktop sounds can play. Once you've made the change, click Apply and then close XMMS and restart.
