Hello,
Lets say you have 2.2.X and then you upgraded to 2.4.X kernel, will you have to get 2.4.X compatible modem driver?
if so....
then what if the modem company doesn't make 2.4.. driver...
are you screwed?

If you are talking about a Winmodem driver that you have to build then it all depends on the driver. The Lucent Driver ltmodem for example only needs to be rebuilt when you upgrade the kernel.
If the driver specifically states that it is not compatible with the 2.4 kernel then you are stuck with keeping the 2.2 kernel or losing the modem.

If it is really a hardware modem I see no reason for it not to be supported by 2.4.x kernels. Does RedHat's hardware compatability list include a modem section?
If not, search for it by make and model on google/linux or post specific questions here.

Any good external serial hard modem will work with anything.
