I've been using the Forte newreader in Windows for quite a while, so in setting up Pan I just sort of followed my nose. Seemed to be much like Forte.

my news server: news.mybiz.net

I've tried it with just letting it try to connect without feeding the server my ISP username and password, and try to connect without these items (I'm already signed onto the ISP and it's accepted my password already, right?) I've tried adding @ispname to my username like I have to in Kppp to connect.

When I ask for a list of usegroups it gives me "Connecting" in to lower left corner and hangs there forever without giving and error or timing out.

What am I doing wrong?

Do you have to use your username and password to connect to your news server in windows? If you do, then you have to enter your username and password.

I'd recommend using slrn. Much cooler and simpler:

1. Get slrn
2. export NNTPSERVER="news.mybiz.net"
3. slrn -f $HOME/.newsrc -create

and every other time you need to use it, just: slrn

In Forte Agent, in Windows, I do have to use my username and password, but... there is also a checked box that says "if there's already a connection open, use that". Perhaps that's what's wrong, can't remember Pan having such a box. I had such a terrific time getting RH7 to connect to ISP in Kppp that I'm not enthusiastic about trying to initiate first connect with Pan, without going to Kppp -> ISP first.

Problem solved. news.mybiz.net got 2 z's: mybizz.net.

Can't trust the old memory no more.
