Hello all,

I know this is an old package of redhat, but to start and complete my project I need to install this package first. I have tried 3 times to install this redhat release with no success, here are the details:

1_ It's a fresh install with a new 80G single IDE drive, using CD_ROM installation method.
2_ I go throw the installation steps, first I wanted to do custom install and manually partition the drive, keeping in mind LILO guide lines from the redhat 6.2 reference guide: Here is the disk Partition
/boot 16MB
/ 1.7g
/usr 30g
swap 2g
/home reminder of disk space
At the end it asks for creating a boot disk, and an indication of installation successfully completed, the system rejects the CR-ROM and it reboots, I go to the BOIS setting to change the boot select to "HDD 0".........The system boots and it go throw some text messaging then it halt with this
"Kernal Panic: Attempted to kill the idle tak!
In Swapper task-not Syncing"

I thought maybe there was a problem with my partitioning, so I go back and go throw the re-install but this time I selected server install, again at the end of the installation and during the rebooting of the system I got the same message.......................

Again I only need this install to do the work I need to do, and this is getting the best of me. So of somebody could advice I would really appreciate...................

Thanks,

I'm not sure what the problem could be but the 80Gb drive working with 6.2 I would question. you might want to try a smaller hard drive and see if it works any better.

first I would get the computer first down to basic's just video and hd to see if it boots then. If it does you know iit's something like you nic.

Also what is the kernal doing right before it panics?

Thanks for the reply, I have removed the nic and rebooted the problem still there. When the system first boot, it shows LILO: "I don't do anything here" so it uses the default, the system start going throw a series text messaging including memory and what have you. Here is a list of the text toward the end just before I have the "kernal Panic......................."

CPU: AMD Durn process stepping 00
Enabling extended fast fpu save and restore...............done
disabling cpuid serial number..........general protection fault:00
cpu: 0
EIP: 0010: [<c02340f4>]
Eflags: 00010282
"it goes throw and lists eax, ebx, ecx................ss with hex-numbers assigned to each one..............Then it lists the following:

Process Swapper (pid: 0, Process nr:0, Stackpage=c0233000)
Stack: c0106000 ................................... 2 lines of hex numbers
Call Trace: [<c0106000>] [<c01d7d0b>] [<c0100175>]
code: 0f 32 0d 00 00 20 00 0f 30 68 21 78 1d c0 e8 27 fd ed ff 83
Kernal Panic: Attempted to kill the idle tak!
In Swapper task-not Syncing

AND IT JUST SITS THERE

I tried to boot from the boot disk that I was asked to create during the installation
And this is what I get

LILO..........
linux
0x10

Then it just keeps looping with the same information?

perhaps try just doing a basic partitioning with the swap partitino 512mb (no need for anything larger) and then the rest being the root partition.
