My pal called me up with this one:

His display in X is kinda goofed. He has a 15", 13.6 veiwable, but when he boots to X only about 11 1/2" is veiwable. He has to decrease the size of the screen and shift it over about an inch. The resolution is also slightly wavy. His monitor reports that is running 53.6Khz/65Hz. We have went into his XF86config and changed it to to every concievable setting withing the range of his monitor manual, still doing it. He has a voodoo 5, but so do I and I have no problems. Any suggestions?

have you guys tried the generic svga monitor?
Go through the list and try all the settings that equal or are LOWER than the monitors manual states.
Wavy means the refresh rate of the card is not in sync with what the monitor thinks is optimal.
