Not only is Knoppix a great little rescue disk for Windows, but I found that it can take the pain out of manually configuring X (like Debian makes you do.) I spent several hours, off and on, trying to get a flat panel display to get rid of the message "Unsupported Video Mode" before I came up with (or read about - I wish I could remember) the following procedure.
Just boot the Knoppix CD on the machine that you are having trouble configuring the XF86Config or XF86Config-4 file.
When the boot process is complete, go into /etc/X11 and copy the XF86Config(-4) file to a floppy. Boot into your problem configuration and copy this file into the same place (or wherever your distro wants it). Or cut and paste the significant parts into the existing config file.
This is a great procedure if you have an older monitor that you can fry if you manually probe it with the wrong settings.
