Xine won't play DVDs

I'm at my wit's end here.

I've installed Xine 1rc4, libdvdcss 1.2.8 etc.. I've created a group "dvd", added myself to the group, done "chgrp dvd /dev/hdc" then "chmod g+rw /dev/hdc" (which is my DVD drive).

Can anyone tell me why this ----

---happens before I get the "Error reading NAV packet" error on screen?

It's driving me insane. It plays unencrypted DVDs perfectly (promos etc) yet it won't play encrypted ones.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Double check you permissions. I know a guy that had that problem before and it was because his permissions "misteriously" changed.

I use xine-lib 1_rc2 because the wmv playback is not broken in it and this requires that i take xine-ui down to 0.9.22-r2. while xine-lib installs it says the old plugins won't work anymore. I attribute it to this but really all I know is that rc2 works for me
