Sheriff 04-28-2001, 06:14 PM Mandrake 8. Just got it installed. everything worked except getting my network printer setup correct. Even found and installed drivers for onboard sound on this fic-503a mobo. :D twofoolish2b 04-28-2001, 06:20 PM Here we go:  Slackware  Ashcrow 04-28-2001, 06:49 PM Mandrake is probably the easiest to use, but my favorite is Slackware by far! :) quiksilver xtc 04-28-2001, 06:55 PM doesen't slackware build stuff from source, i don't know how to do that yet. which distros do not build from source that would work well with my gateway? (yes, its unfortunate, i wish i had a dell, but thats a whole other forum ;) ) fallenang3l 04-28-2001, 07:28 PM Windows 98 SE Just kidding :D 'Drake 8. 16837 04-28-2001, 07:43 PM http://www.learninglinux.com/images/forum/subject/icon6.gif Debian http://www.learninglinux.com/images/forum/subject/icon6.gif So maybe not the easiest but it's stable and its package manager kicks butt. Derango 04-28-2001, 09:05 PM Theres a NHF on Linux Distro's here: http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/distros/distronhf.html It might help you. plasmid 04-28-2001, 10:59 PM Libranet (Debian) nite 04-29-2001, 05:00 AM mmmm debian :D Chatterjee 04-29-2001, 05:06 AM Mandrake 8.0 -S bdg1983 04-29-2001, 05:14 AM http://www.atomicvocals.com/ubb/sm07.gif Debian http://www.atomicvocals.com/ubb/sm07.gif Ok, not the easiest to install and configure, but once you have it up and running, it's the easiest distro to upgrade and keep up to date. I've heard that Progeny Debian (http://www.progeny.com/prodserv/progenydebian/) is easier to install than pure Debian. Bradmont2 04-29-2001, 06:05 AM Nothin' beats good ol' debian! Once it's installed, software installs/updates are really easy. Mr. Pink 04-29-2001, 07:22 AM Umm, well never tried Debian. But Mandrake 7.2 and 8.0 are ridiculously easy to update. It's great for Desktop stuff but I wouldn't use it for a server due to it's weak security. I'm a Slackware buff when it comes to servers. By far the most secure and dependable on that front. That's just my opinion but it is completely and absolutely correct :D johnmann 04-29-2001, 08:35 AM SuSE has been the best distro for this hopetobe a linux user, got Drake7.2,8.0 and Libranet1.9 still liked SuSE best, this is a newbie's viewpoint however Lend273 04-29-2001, 09:37 AM Libranet Debian foo_bar 04-29-2001, 03:06 PM Definitely Debian...once it's up and running, it's a breeze to update. geddy 04-29-2001, 03:29 PM If you want to get some work done (windows 2000 pro) If you want to mess around and play games (Mandrake 8) Antho 04-29-2001, 07:20 PM LFS (Linux From Scratch) ...OK, not really a distro per se, but it is the most educational experience I've ever had :) Daedra 04-29-2001, 07:39 PM http://www.slackware.com/~msimons/slackware/grfx/slackware_title.jpg mikeparks 04-29-2001, 07:47 PM http://www.slackware.com/~msimons/slackware/grfx/slackware_title.jpg http://www.slackware.com/~msimons/slackware/grfx/slackware_title.jpg ] http://www.slackware.com/~msimons/slackware/grfx/slackware_title.jpg bobtcowboy 04-29-2001, 08:20 PM Originally posted by NGene: I've heard that Progeny Debian (http://www.progeny.com/prodserv/progenydebian/) is easier to install than pure Debian. thats my que...
