Is it the same as a windows terminal server, where I can remotely log in to the server and run MSWORD for example?

Didnt understand this "LTSP is an add-on package for Linux that allows you to connect lots of low-powered thin client terminals to a Linux server. Applications typically run on the server, and accept input and display their output on the thin client display. "

yes, as with any Terminal Server, the apps run on the server and are displayed on the client terminal/monitor.

You can redirect the display out put to a remote host. If you're looking for somthing similar to terminal services on Windows, try using VNC which is installed by default on some Linux distrobutions or try downloading tightvnc which is even better.
