at a topic on the forum of linuxquestions.org (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?s=a7204755f75b0feab7c1b2d14d3cb838&threadid=7690) i saw the following:
Mandrake
My appreciations about Mandrake:
-You insert the installation cd,10min later, your linux is working, operationnal, and all utilities are ready (mirc, licq etc..)
-Mandrake give you a lot of useful sys accesoiries, watching your memories or building a network can't be easier!
-If you're a newbie mandrake do not require a deep comprehension of linux Os
-If you have a Dual OS computer, you will like Mandrake Lilo, easy to use, easy to install... no damage to MBR.
So there's an mIRC under linux?
I NEVER heard of that, if anyone of you guys did, I have some questions:
- is it also made by Khaled (the author of the windows mIRC),
- is it basically the same as the windows mIRC,
- is it the same scripting language?
Thanks in advance.

Now you're talking about wine, do i simply have to install, or do i have to :mad:configure  it too? I always fail with *.conf files :(
Also, is there a lot to configure, or just one file (wine.conf or whatever) and i could use a wine.conf of someone else who also has mandrake & win98

If you use the codeweavers version of wine it has a gui to configure you wine.conf file. I don't think it supports OpenGL but for using mIRC/MS Office etc it works really well. But why use mIRC when there are so many good IRC clients for linux?

erm.. i have a feeling that i'm going to ask something really dumb, but.. what's opengl?
also, i know i have wine installed (i used an rpm) but how can i see if i have the codeweavers version + how do i launch that gui?
i don't need ms office, i only want mIRC and windows .hlp-files :)

why use mirc?
cause
- mirc is the best irc client ever
- i made stuff with mirc which i can't use anymore :(
- mirc is the most "open" or how should i call it for scripting
- i can script under mirc, though i can't (never looked at it) under xchat&kvirc

why would you want to use mirc? It's trash.

xchat is far better as far as gui irc clients go.

xchat has the ability to run plugins and scripts as well. ive long used Mirc before i switched to linux and i can tell you, i havent come across anything in Mirc that i cannot now do in xchat.

The codeweavers wine is avaliable here (http://www.codeweavers.com/technology/wine/download.php).

The codeweavers wine is much more stable than the cvs tarball at winehq (http://www.winehq.com).

Make sure you dont have any versions of wine installed before installing that one (rpm -q wine).

Type 'wine' at a prompt to bring up a dialog with a 'configure' button. After going though the wizard use 'wine <path_to_windows_app>' to run it.

One thing I dont understand is why the author of mirc doesnt port it to linux. Mirc scripting is completly based of bash scripting. It would make alot of sense to release a linux version and i dont see how it could be that hard to do (although I really dont know).

ok tnx

then download your plugins, think mirc is trash, whatever.. i like it, and that's the only thing which counts for me (btw the q wasn't "is mirc good"?)

openGL is a 3d graphics API, like Direct3D or Glide. Its very popular in high end 3d graphics aps, as well as some games, mostly first person shooters based on one of the Quake Engines

If you want an IRC client that is similar to mIRC then use KVIRC KVIRC Homepage (http://www.kvirc.net/). You can check out the screenshots there and see for yourself what it looks like and what features it offers.
