Still having fun starting debian.
Have just finally managed to get x working without any glitches :D what a pain.
As I was able to install xfree 4 with just one apt-get, is there a similar one deb to install ked and gnome ?
TIA

Nope, you have to install each of the packages yourself... and good luck finding KDE debs...

For GNOME:
apt-get install gnome-bin gnome-core gnome-utils gnome-panel gnome-data gnome-terminal
(that should grab most of what you need)
For KDE:
apt-get install kde

If you'd like to have both kde and gnome, I'd scroll around the uninstalledpackages->tasks in aptitude. I installed gnome and kde during taskel in my initial install so not really sure if there'd be a task for it.
I'm just that lazy. gotta luv aptitude :p

I have followed the Gnome instructions but KDE doesn't exist. I installed 2.2r5 and dist-upgraded pointing to woody.
How do I start Gnome? I can't find any info on how to start it.

Strike's right, I installed KDE with apt a few months ago, easy as pie. :) (Debian Woody)
Update: For finding the apt name for debian packages, choose your distro from
here (http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages)and go into the X-Windows section.
Hmm, using 'kde' by itself comes up with an invalid cadidate error though. What did I type? Back in a bit once I figure it out. THis is gnawing at me now :)
Update #2: Ok, I think its kdebase (KDE base applications). I run kdm (KDE windows manager). Not sure if that's a prerequisite or not but works great.

I'm a little new at doing a config change of a desktop environment at the command line level but there would probably be a setting in a file under the directory Desktop in your user dir.
The way I've switched before is through the the popup taskbar.
If I'm way off topic and all you want to do is start the X-windows system. type:
startx
