Hi Im Rob aka Mr Crusty. This is my first poston this forum. I can't even call myself a linux newbie unless finding some install discs in a rubbish skip counts. I have been intrigued to find out what Linux is like for some time and finding these discs spurred me into action. Unfortunately I have fallen at the first fence.
I am trying to install RH Linux 7.1 onto a partition on a second hard disc. When I boot from CD or floppy I press enter at the install options and then just get a load of system info with the penguin thingy at the top. The "graphical mode" install process with language selection does not appear.
Any ideas?

Have you tried to choose a text mode?
Red Hat 7.1 is pretty old, you should be able to get it installed on your computer but i'd suggest either downloading or buying the latest version of Red Hat
Red Hat don't support 9.0 any more so you might want to look at Fedora, its bascially red hat, and give that a try, the sites fedora.redhat.com, i believe
Or if your feel like spending £4-6 on the cd's have a look at www.uselinux.co.uk

What are the hardware specs? If you have fairly new hardware, you may have problems installing such a old distro version.

you may want to try a newer version of redhat or another distro, as the 7.1 release of redhat has major bugs.

Obviously the discs were in the rubbish skip for a reason. I shall go about finding a more up-to-date version as you all suggest.
Many thanks for your help.

Thanks but I have already ordered the following from www.uselinux.co.uk:
1 x Fedora Core 2 test2 (FC2T2) = £6.50
1 x Knoppix 3.3 (2004-02-16 EN) (KX33) = £1.20
Hopefully these will get me up and running. Please advise if you think I need anything else or if either products are no good.
Cheers
Rob

Fedora is bascially Red Hat, I havent used core 2 but i did use core 1 for a bit, and I found it better than Red Hat 9, I havent really used Knoppix but it has very good hardware detection and can be run without installing on your hard drive, but if you like it you can install it onto your hard drive.
So both are good choice Fedora is probably more newbie friendly but then Knoppix isnt hard to use either, put the cd in and reboot :)
