All:

I associated a zip extension with a default application PKZIP for some odd reason when I right click on the file in the GNOME “PKZIP” shows up multiple times. When I go into “File Types and Programs” PKZIP is only listed once. I had issues setting up the association and added it and deleted it a couple of times so my guess is its being stored somewhere.

Any ideas?

~/.gnome/application-info/user.applications

there are also files in ~/.gnome/mime-info that you can lok at.

PS: you could have found this yourself by using the grep command in ~/.gnome and ~/.gnome2
cd .gnome
grep -rl text_you_are_looking_for *

PPS: the Gnome archive utility is called file-roller and it handles (more or less) all archive formats including .zip.

Go with Hayl, get the file-roller for Gnome as it does a great job with compressed files using the GUI
