Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Installing W2K w/linux...I need to know if I can use LILO instead of 2k's bootloader ClearNinja 04-28-2001, 01:26 PM I havent been able to find any accounts of anyone booting w2k and LINUX from LILO, I dont want to use 2k's bootloader. Gotta load W2K so I can play black and white :) Jazzphone 04-28-2001, 01:55 PM This is a simple question. All you need to do is install Win2k and the Install Linux. LILO will install with linux and should see Win2k. Hoped i help. Jazzphone 04-28-2001, 01:57 PM I see that you havent loaded Win2k yuour just running linux. Make sure you have a boot floody made for linux. After you install Win2k. LILO wont be there so use the floody and edit the lilo in /usr/boot i think. trekker 04-28-2001, 02:31 PM Yep, Jazzphone is right. Ideally, you should install win2k followed by linux and it should work fine. Just to add on to jazzphone's reply, if you already have linux installed and want to put in win2k. Make a linux boordisk like what jazzphone says. Install win2k, reboot using the linux boot disk, edit your /etc/lilo.conf (you can do a forum search on what to edit) and rerun lilo with "/sbin/lilo" at the command line. AFAIK, the win2k bootloader is installed by default. If you follow the steps outlined, you should be using lilo to dual boot. Hope this helps :) prince_kenshi 04-28-2001, 04:26 PM I had the same ordeal as you for a while. I couldn't find anyone who did it but I decided to try it anyway because booting from a floppy was getting old. Here's my lilo.conf: root=/dev/hdb4 boot=/dev/hda # This file was created automatically by liloconfig # # run dpkg-reconfigure lilo if you want to change the way this operates install=/boot/boot-menu.b delay=50 vga=normal lba32 read-only default=linux image=/boot/bzImage label=linux append="hdc=ide-scsi" image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.18pre21 label=old_linux other=/dev/hda1 label=windows table=/dev/hda The King Ant 04-28-2001, 04:45 PM LILO booting Linux and Win2k works great. You can also use Win2k's boot loader, but it's a pain. lilo is far better and easier. Orion-X 04-28-2001, 08:10 PM I was actually thinking about dual boot with ntloader. And I do have win2k installed right now. How would I install linux so I can boot with win2k? Do I need to install lilo during linux install? ClearNinja 04-29-2001, 12:28 AM Thanks guys.. It worked great. I thought for some reason that you couldnt use boot W2K w/o using its boot loader, that you had to configure ntloader to load Linux. Im glad that I got to use LILO. Thanks again everyone! :) SUOrangeman 04-29-2001, 01:41 PM I actually prefer NT Loader over LILO for my overall system booting needs. I gives me instant access to any of the four or five OSes I have installed. LILO is still needed to boot Linux, but it will only create one Windows entry (if Win9x anf NTx are installed "naturally"). The folks at www.winimage.com (http://www.winimage.com) have a utility called bootpart which allows you to add *any* bootable partition to the NT Loader. -SUO justlinux.com
