Hey,

I am trying to learn as much as possible about Linux so decided to dust down an old machine and load it on to it. I have had loads of problems with my BT Voyager 100 modem and have since bought a ZOOM ADSL modem/router, now I have since installed that onto my windows box without a hitch (using the usb port) and have connected my Linux box using the ethernet port but cant seem to get it to connect. I am using Mandrake 9.2 and when I go to my Control Centre and try to configure my internet it correctly finds my card but starts asking me for some weirtd stuff like the ip address of the machine and the netmask, hostname and gateway. I am afraid I have no idea where to even start.

Any help is appreciated

it seems that it is looking for the IP address and subnet mask for your router (gateway) that's easy,

is there a setting to set DHCP? that would most likely be your best bet, have your router assign the IP address to your machine automatically, no fuss, no muss.

you could assign static ip address ( is: 192.168.0.101) etc with a sub net mask of (255.255.255.0), and just use the router's ip as the defualt gate way ( 192.168.0.1 )or whatever yours happens to be

But I think that it is easier to just use DHCP.

hope this helps,
