I live in a small town that doesn't have broadband. I would like to setup a high-speed wireless network to serve the town....I am a network admin and a client of mine has a T1 line here in the town where I want to implement it....how would I go about this.....I think the best solution would be mesh wireless (access points at various spots around town) and I'd like to use linux to build the access points/routers etc.

Where would I start ?? -

Wouldn't that me 'roaming'? Search Google to see what you can find.

I have never done it for a town but I can say how we did it for work. We use the linksys wireless G routers. They now have signal boosters that you can get which should help you. We went with the linksys stuff because their cheap. I guess if you use a free pc a linux box could be cheaper but the linksys routers are so much easier to install/hide.

The big problem I see is how to get them all connected. You can use linux routers but how to get the wire from one part of town to the next would seem to be a problem unless you can get the linux router with a wireless card close enough to the next network segment to connect to it and route between them.

The next thing I would think about is setting up some kind of authentication. Our wireless lan only goes to a vpn server it doesn't go to the internet. This protects the wireless users from the internet and if someone other then a employee where to get on they wouldn't have direct access to the company. They also would not be able to use our wireless lan to attack other companies which I think would be your biggest legal concern.
