Well if I'm repeating a question already answered, I'm sorry, but up to this point I haven't found it anywhere on the ENTIRE net.

My question is, does anyone know how to set up a dsl connection for Alltel and Slackware 9.1? Here is what I've tried

I have verified the line in works because I've used it on an Win ME machine. I know the computer/card works because I've recently had it on-line with WinME. My card is seen by Linux as a 3Com card. Mod 39Xsomthing or other. I have pinged myself using ifconfig, without the modem on and it works. When my modem is on, the 3 lights come on showing it to be in sync. (Looks like it always does on the Win machine) I have a DHCP connection. I do not have a static IP. I have tried using netconfig but it appears to me not to ask for enough data. It never ask for Alltel's address 166.102.165.13 (I think) I've tried using dhcpcd but it's a little crytic, I couldn't tell what it is needing.

Also I know I don't need MAC, because I've used several cards over the last few years and I've never had to contact Alltel with an address. Right?

In short I'm at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated. And yes I'm a newbie to Linux, but not a computer totally. Been working with them since DOS 3.3

Thanks
Ace

Can you state your NIC? the model and brand.

Also if you have a ethernet modem then it probably will have no problems as ethernet modems are OS independant

Maybe your NIC had a wrong driver installed...

Moved to the Networking forum since Installation is meant for distro install issues.

try from a command line:

ifconfig

then give us the out put, also what type of dsl connection is your service? pppoe? pppoa? a static ip?

answer those and you will probably get some help.
