Hi!
I have a problem! I have Slackware and when I chosed to install all packages then it installed GAIM too. Now I clicked to add new account and entered my username, password and alias and then clicked connect. The I get this error:
Connection Error:
Yosuke_4mfs has been disconnected
Thu April 22 09:32:09 2004
Unable to read

I entered the right password and the right username! Maybe this is the problem: It connects to this host scs.yahoo.com 5050 maybe there is a new host address?? Thank you!

Yahoo! from time to time tries to block out third-party applications. Just keep GAIM up2date (http://gaim.sourceforge.net). You can find RPMs and the source code on the website. The current version is 0.77.

Is there any version for Slackware? Or just RPMs?

http://www.linuxpackages.net is a great place for slackware packages:

http://www.linuxpackages.net/search_view.php?by=name&name=gaim&ver=9.1

yes, you can build Gaim from source (.tar.gz and .tar.bz2) so that shouldn't be a problem. I guess there are Slackware-Specific ones also.

hey, I've read a few manuals and I'm just plain confused. I went to linuxpackages.net and got the slackware 10.0 package for gaim 0.79 but how do I install it? I'm currently running gaim 0.78. Any help?

there was an uproar recently because yahoo changed their protocol, you could be barking up a tree that doesn't like dogs...

Modify the Yahoo rpm for RH 9.0. using the "rpm2tgz" function. Then use "pkgtool" to install the .tgz. Your executable and icon will be located in /opt/ymessenger/bin....."ymessenger". if your using Gnome change out all your sounds by using the ones in the Gaim directory or others you like in........ /usr/share/sounds.

BTW...no more upgrading Gaim every two days.:D

I was wondering too what happened with Gaim and Kopete. Thanks a lot to all the guys who answered this thread.

Hello John T.,
I followed your advice on converting the YahooMessenger for RH9 into tar.gz and install it via pkgtool.

It installed under /opt/ymessenger

however, it did not create a shortcut whatsoever on my KDE menu. So I manually invoke it via
/opt/ymessenger/bin/ymessenger

The problem is it won't run on ordinary user. It gives an error message "segmentation fault". When I su to root and invoke it once more, it runs.

I tried to change its permissions and ownership but still that error is present. Is there something I missed?

Did you install as root or user? There are other files distributed througout your system from the Yahoo install. Try to locate them and check permissions on them. I'm not at home in Linux, so I can't be more specific at the moment. Let me know if you have anymore trouble.

Okay i'll try to install it via ordinary user and ill post the results.

The webpage says to install as root, so there must be other issues involved. I won't be home for another 6 hrs, but I'll check my install and see if there's something I neglected to cover, but I don't know what it would be, at the moment.

I'll just wait for you then. No need to hurry.;)

/opt/ymessenger/bin
/opt/ymessenger/bin/yahoo_gnome.png
/opt/ymessenger/bin/ymessenger
/opt/ymessenger/bin/ymessenger.local
/opt/ymessenger/bin/ymessenger.kdelnk
/opt/ymessenger/bin/ymessenger.bin
/opt/ymessenger/bin/ymessenger.desktop
/opt/ymessenger/bin/yahoo_kde.xpm
/opt/ymessenger/lib
/opt/ymessenger/lib/libgtkhtml.so.6
/var/log/packages/rh9.ymessenger-1.0.4-1.i386
/usr/bin/ymessenger
/usr/bin/ymessenger.local
/usr/share/applications/ymessenger.desktop

Hello John T.,
I followed your advice on converting the YahooMessenger for RH9 into tar.gz and install it via pkgtool. Is that a misprint...it should be to a .tgz extension as this is Slackware.rpm2tgz <filename> then install withpkgtool

mhacleth
07-20-2004, 09:20 PM
Hey John T,
Yes that's misprint. It actually ends with .tgz :p

I tried uninstalling it with removepkg and install it again via installpkg but similar results.

I have similar entries just like yours.
I tried running ymessenger like this

mhacleth@slackmhac:~$ymessenger
-bash: /usr/bin/ymessenger: Permission denied
mhacleth@slackmhac:~$

I changed ownerships and permissions in the /usr/bin/ but hey, still *permission denied*

JohnT

Then try every file...starting with /opt. Don't forget those in /usr/share.

what is wrong with gaim  They release a new version about every 3 weeks or so, not daily.

It has just always been problematic attempting to keep up with Yahoo messenger........Gaim almost needs a daily release to be able to operate properly with Yahoo. I tried Gaim more than several times , but got tired of it being inoperative with Yahoo for sometimes 2 weeks at a time until they caught up with the code. I have too many contacts on Yahoo that aren't anxious to change to anything else. Dont get me wrong...I like the app...its just not useful for me.

I will say that was true a while ago, but they have been pretty good at releasing a fix within hours lately. The release of .79 fixed the yahoo issue in the same day. That was the first problem I've had with it in months.

Well, that's exactly what John T and I are trying to avoid. To update gaim every three days (now its hours). I can use gaim, why not? But I don't want to download it every three days so that my messenger would run.
:D

Hey John,
here's the latest error message:

mhacleth@SlackMhac:~$ ymessenger
/usr/bin/ymessenger: line 1: XXX: command not found
mhacleth@SlackMhac:~$
mhacleth@SlackMhac:~$ file /usr/bin/ymessenger
/usr/bin/ymessenger: ASCII text
mhacleth@SlackMhac:~$ su
Password:
root@SlackMhac:/home/mhacleth# cat /usr/bin/ymessenger
XXX
root@SlackMhac:/home/mhacleth#

I'm kinda lost there...

OK, I've gotten these error messages before. The only workaround I could find was to remove the app completly...run updatedb.....try to locate any pieces left over..then reinstall as root. Sorry...it just doesn't install correctly some times. Download a fresh rpm.

BTW...the command is ..../opt/ymessenger/bin/ymessenger

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but my point was that you don't have to upgrade it every three days, it is more like every three weeks, look at the Changelog, http://gaim.sourceforge.net/ChangeLog

I'm on my way to freshrpms.net or messenger.yahoo.com

Say, John T, would the windoze version run under wine?
:D

They would have to do it on the average every four to five days and I don't think they have the resources or inclination to keep up at that rate. I can actually see Yahoo updating on XP that often. By the time Gaim updates its already outdated.

Again, I'm just saying that isn't true anymore, I use GAIM daily and have a yahoo account, it hasn't had any problems.
