ok...so weird problem:

@ startup I'm hearing a beep (somthing like the system (mobo) speaker would produce, then i hear kde load music trying to play over...rather under the beeeeeeeeeep sound. sound doesnt stop.


EDIT: I thought it was when kde starts up - wrong its when linux starts up.

My guess:
Since you have the 2.6 kernel, in the miscellaneous section under input device support in the kernel config is an option for "pc speaker". Perhaps that is enabled and is causing the speaker to beep during boot up. Aside from recompiling the kernel (which may be one of those "real easy" or "real complicated" things in mandrake), I'm thinking unplugging it from the motherboard may be a way to stop it.

Open a terminal and su to root. The run alsamixer and set the AC97 mixer control to 0 and see if it stops. You will have to scroll right by pressing the right arrow key until you find it.

See if you have a option in the system bios to disable the pc speaker or you can use the commandline

xset -b

to turn off the 'bell'.
