Its a thin 2-core wire that any half-competent system builder (by that I mean NOT Dell) would use. They come free with every sound card and, I think, every cd-drive. Windows doesn't need this because it compensates by software but there's a CPU overhead and a quality hit. I'm tired of answering this question, can we have a different one, please? :D Baranohell 04-16-2002, 08:16 AM lol, sorry about having to answer that question so often..but I'm not a complete moron, I built the machine and the cable is there. Also, I have maxed ALL volume settings (including CD Audio). Thanks again for the help mrBen 04-16-2002, 08:36 AM Are you dual booting? I've noticed that making changes to volumes in Windows also seems to affect the amount of volume available in Linux (or I could be wrong ;) ). Just a thought. BTW - which DE are you running? Have you tried playing CDs with only the console running? (Poss KDE sound thingy conflict) klrmar 04-16-2002, 08:37 AM Hey Bugfix, lighten up. If you don't want to reply to the question go on to one that gives you more of a challenge. klrmar ;) bugfix 04-16-2002, 09:06 AM I was trying to be sarcastic but because things have wound me up today it may have come out wrong. Er,...sorry. :D Anyway, I can't think of anything else except the mixer levels or something muted. I'm now going to crawl silently away and kick something, possibly something immovable and heavy in order to vent frustruation and save other newb's from my anger/boredom. Sorry. klrmar :) bugfix 04-16-2002, 09:29 AM Its ok, I think you had a point; I may have come across a little impatient. czgu 04-18-2002, 10:08 AM I had same problem. I use RH 7.2 (installed everything). When I sstted SB16, I could play rm, mp3 files, but CD. I read a lot of HOWTOs and followed all suggestions. It just didn't work! Finally I found that if I disabled sb, only use ad1848, which I think is wss. I could play mp3.... and CD audios. One day my system went wrong forced me to re-installed RH7.2. I only installed default selections, and sb, wss all enabled without any problem. I can play CD and audio files. So in my case, I think installing everything may screw things up. justlinux.com
