I am curious about something and wanted some outside input. I have a FreeBSD box with a Athlon 2100 XP Processor...a Gig of DDR and a custom kernel.
I also have a P4 3.0 ghz with a Gig of DDR and a 2.6 kernel running Gentoo.
At 100% CPU load, the FreeBSD box keeps up a nice good pace. I can still do other activities on that machine. On my GNU/Linux box, at a100%, things start to bog down.
My question is, which is holding up under the load? Is it the Athlon? Is it FreeBSD? I am suprised that half the processing power does better under 100% load. Perhaps it is the OS? I don't know.

tried the 2.6 kernel? it fixes that problem, i think.
also, what were u doing with linux in 100% load? if it is more intensive than the BSD work, it'd be slow anyway.

In both cases, I am just compiling source code.

what window managers are you using.
also something to remember is amd vs intel.
amd=diesel
intel=regular
amd will give you more torque for your ghz meaning you can put more of a load into the processing
but intel will waste that same amd for any single operation or most 3d rendering.
to sum it up you can run more apps at one time without noticable lag with an amd than you can with an intel
i almost forgot im using gentoo on an athlon xp 2800 barton and i can do emerge openoffice
use xmms superkaramba fluxbox gaim opera netscape and emerge kde at the same time without lag

Interesting comparison as I drive a diesel in real life :D
I'm aware of the extra bang for the buck with AMD. But I also am curious if it is that extreme. I doubt it. We are talking almost double the clock speed as well as a faster FSB.

I should mention I am using KDE on both boxes.

that is just what ive seen with my 2.08 athlon w/ 333fsb to the 3.06p4 with an 800fsb with otherwize identical hardware and same os
i build rigs for people so i get to do a lot of testing like that.
with the intel you can do 1 large function and tons of smaller but with the amds you can do a few large and a bunch of smaller ones at the same time.
looks like my next task will be comparing linux to freebsd on identical machines.
ill be sure to tell you the results, you never know fbsd may controll processess better.

i find KDE slow too, try lighter stuff like XFCE and GTK apps (like gqview instead of kview).
also, update to 2.6.x.

Thanks. I'm running 2.6.5. I have been running 2.6 since back when it was in testing.

I'm curious what you will find. Everybody talks about how FreeBSD makes a wonderful server OS. How do they really compare?
I know what you mean on the P4 and the AMD. I'm still quite happy with my Athlon XP 2100. I decided to try the P4 again (I had one of the very early P4s which sucked) based on reviews I have read. And while it is pleasing in some respects, I almost wish I had gone with an Athlon 64. Oh well.

we all have our little niche's i just found mine when i was comparing the two procs.
just a note though i did not run any 3d stuff besides my 1800x1600 pics, but no gl stuff. so i figure the p4 would waste the athlon in that area. once again mac truck to honda accord
in my research the tests that everyone shows you online are done in windoze with windoze testers
my goal was to test it in linux.
