USB Hard Drives in Mandrake 9.2

I've got two external USB Hard drives, both formatted in NTFS as they were originally used with Windows XP. When I plug them in, Mandrake recognizes them and automatically mounts them, but there is nothing in the directories. If anyone has any suggestions that would be great. I'm new to linux and am trying to learn command line, so if you have directions please be highly detailed:)

have you tried seeing if you can see any files on them as root? it may be a permissions thing in your /etc/fstab.
