im running suse 9.0 system ... i was on slackware before and realized the ugly look of gtk apps like xchat or gimp .... the fonts are too small and ugly anyway!

Where can i change the look of such apps .... fonts size etc?

any suggestions?

The appearance of your fonts has nothing to do with the distro and more to do with your hardware and X rendering of those fonts. Not a lot can be done about your hardware, with the exception of updated drivers in some instances, but you could start by changing some of your font types. Install some TTF. Typically moving some from a windows installation is one way. Another is visiting one of the many sites on the internet that offer free TTF.

It uses the fonts specified by the gtk theme thing... The files your are looking for are ~/.gtkrc and ~/.gtkrc-2.0
Apps that use gtk 1.2 (usually just refered to just gtk) can't display the nice antialiased fonts that gtk2 uses.

XChat and the new version of gimp use gtk2, so those can have the nice fonts...

The easiest way to display all fonts in the Gimp is to have your system fonts set-up before installation of Gimp, but normally it will pick them up.

Also try the KDE Control Center under Appearance & Themes/Fonts.

you have to either write a ~/.gtkrc file by hand, OR launch the gnome-control-panel and use the font applet in there along with the teme applet to set your theme OR use gtk-theme-switch.

NOTE: for Gtk2 apps, you MUST run the gnome-settings-daemon in the background in order for apps to theme (including font settings).
