I have this problem, from the log file, it's clear that RANDR extension is started, and it doesn't seem to be any evidence that it's stopped. However, when using xrandr, it states that RANDR is missing. Here's the parsed log file:

saturn_vk@sat:~$ cat /var/log/XFree86.0.log | egrep [Rr][Aa][Nn][Dd]
(==) RandR enabled
(II) Initializing built-in extension RANDR

I'm not at all familiar with xrandr.

You could try

xrandr --verbose

to tell you what xrandr is doing and to enable debugging.
