Im wondering which way to go next. I have Mandrake 8.1 installed with a Cmedia CMI8330 installed. Mandrake sees this card but when using Xmms no sound comes from the speakers. The speakers are set up Ok as various progs work under windows.
I have tried installing mss drivers and all versions of the soundblaster driver using sndconfig. No sound.
I have downloaded a driver from opensound.com which may work but will cost 20 bucks. As this is Linux Im against this idea.
Im hearing emu10k1 drivers and ALSA.
Could someone advise me on what to do next.
Thanks

For the CMI8330, you should use either the ad1848 or sb drivers. Assuming you are correct that Mandrake detects the card correctly and loads the correct drivers (run /sbin/lsmod to see which are loaded), what errors do you get when trying xmms? Run xmms from a terminal so you can see the errors that are produced.

Thanks scanez,
I ran xmms from the terminal and the error was:
failed to open audio device /dev/dsp no such file or directory. I created a file called dsp but that didnt make any difference.
When I run sndconfig it gives me CMI model 8330 and then says audio adapter unknown.
I tried drivers ad 1816 no good and with the CMI8330 it gives me a trouble opening /dev/audio. There is another driver Cmedia PCI audio which gives an error : cant open output file /dev/dsp permission denied. When I tried this option I had already deleted the file /dev/dsp I created earlier.
Thanks

what are the permissions on /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer?
i was trimming the fat from the menu in KDE and i removed KDE Media Player (noatun) because i prefer XMMS, plus i removed a few other items, well after removing these items the sound in XMMS would not work...
i found a secret to put most everything back to the default style in a users account by going to /home/user in the user account directory select View and select Show All Files and the delete everything, don't delete the user account directory just empty it, then log off via the taskbar button and when you log back on to that accound everything will be rebuilt with the default values...

Maybe the permission are the problem I have created directories /dsp/mixer and /audio.
However I have had another problem when trying to install postfix which might be relevant. I have created a file then altered the permissions to 775 which I checked doing
ls -l I cannot seem to write to the file. The owner is root and i cant write to the file as root. I cant understand this but maybe this could be the problem with sound.Below are some of the error codes I got when trying to load drivers using sndconfig.
Soundblaster error code (when loading drivers).
The following error occurred running the modprobe program:
/lib/modules/2.4.8-26mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/sb.o.gz: init_module: No such device /lib/modules/2.4.8-26mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/sb.o.gz: insmod
/lib/modules/2.4.8-26mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/sb.o.gz failed
/lib/modules/2.4.8-26mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/sb.o.gz: insmod
sound-slot-0 failed
Error when loading CMI8330 driver:
cant open output file /dev/dsp is a directory
Another was an error when opening /dev/audio.

i had the same problem with exact same (pretty sure) sound card
run this command in a terminal:
modprobe cmpci
then try your sound...should work
and if it does, build it into kernel or put into the equivalent of rc.modules in slackware

Okay, you don't want to create /dev/dsp by yourself, that will be created once the card is working properly. When you run sndconfig, have you tried selecting card as "Windows Sound System"? If not, try it. If you get no sound during the test, change some of the parameters (like the DMA I think it was), and keep trying different parameters...then if sndconfig actually works and you here sound during the test, try running xmms again. Do you get the same, different error?

Good for you geoffbarge,
Ive just got off a chat channel and they ran ou t of ideas. they looked at all kinds of output , lsmod, modprobe sb, they added lines to my /etc/modules.conf, I had to type ad1848 and uart401, nothing worked. Now my sndconfig gives me a segmentation fault so Ill download the latest.
I tried modprobe cmpci and it didnt work.
Imk not sure what to try next. If anyone could suggest anything would greatly appreciate it. It is not an unusual card and my computer is run of the mill so Im not sure what could be wrong. As I said it runs under windows so its not a physical connection problem.
Thanks

you weren't in my room when I first got my computer to actually boot and pass a POST...I'd been trying to make it work for about a week, but nothing seemed to work...then I noticed that the processor was just a little loose...booted up nice and pretty next try...I was happy and pissed...lesson learned: always check your connections...

Understood but as I said it works under windows so physically it must be hooked up ok. I suspect the problem may be simple because Ive had quite a bit of advice on this but nothing seems to get her firing. Not sure what to try now.

go in to the output plugin options...I'm not at my linux box right now, but I had to change it from trying to use /dev/dsp to /dev/sound/dsp...I can't remember exactly where, just go into preferences and then I/O plugin options, and see if that could be it...
