I have just reinstalled debian because my last hdd crashed. Now i have installed everything including gnome-core and xserver-xfree86. Now the problem is that gnome wont start up. I had a look at my Xfree86 log and it said something about core pointer. Now my mouse is a usb mouse plugged into the usb port (just thought i would mention that because some people plug it into the ps2 port. Here is my xfree86 log

It means it can't start because it can't find your mouse device.

The way to test what your mouse device is is to go into /dev and take a look for mouse devices.

generally they are under /dev/input

usually there is mouse0 and mouse1

cat /dev/input/mouse0

then move your mouse around... if you get garbage on the screen then that is the mouse, if not then try it on mouse1.

type in "reset" and press enter if your font gets messed up after cating the device.

after that, edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config file and change the device from /dev/input/mouse to /dev/input/<whatever the correct device is>

Does '/dev/input/mouse' exist?

ls -al /dev/input/mouse*

or check the entire directory contents.

ls -al /dev/input

Some USB mice use /dev/input/mice.

Check to see which device exists in /dev/input and modify the InputDevice section of your X config to match.

OK,
I have checked to see what was in the contents of /dev/input and this is
what was in it

mice
mouse0
mouse1
mouse2
mouse3
mouse4

Now i have tried mice, mouse0 and mouse1 and i still had the same problem.
Could it be something to do with permissions?

Cheers

it's more likely that the device is not being created.

you you ahve all the correct modules installed and loaded for usb and for the mouse?

When i compiled my kernel i enable mouse support under input devices, i also enabled full hid support and also uhid support under usb support. If it helps i have done a modprobe hid and also a modprobe uhid and i tells me the mouse that i have plugged it (microsoft optical etc...) Also the light is turned on on the mouse.

Could you post the entire contents of your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file please?

The "no core pointer" errors indicate that you might have to manually add/adjust a couple of things in that file.

As root ,
edit /etc/X11/XF86Config.
Go to section called 'Core Pointer's InputDevice section'
Change PnP mouse detection to Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
and add these lines :
Option "Buttons" "5"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
save & restart X.

tired what you told me to do (in regard the the mouse config ching it to "bottons" "5" etc... but still nothing. Here is my config file

# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using

# md5sum /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 > /var/lib/xfree86/XF86Config-4.md5sum

This may not help, but at least try by removing the Emulate3Buttons line (comment out) and add Option "Buttons" "5".

I would say you have missed something in your kernel config for USB and/or mouse.

Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"

or

Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"

if /dev/psaux is symlinked to /dev/mouse.

ls -al /dev/mouse

<edit>

Have you checked your system bios settings for the mouse or USB? Everything enabled etc.?

(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4" This is the config file that you're editing, correct? Make sure you're not editing /etc/X11/XF86Config, because if the -4 file exists (which it does), then X will use it instead...

Have you tried leaving the mouse in your USB port, and doing a cat /dev/input/mice? /dev/input/mouse0 is the first mouse that's hooked up to the system, mouse1 is the second, and so on. But /dev/input/mice is another device file that gets a copy of all mouse events that come in on all mice in the system, so your first guess at the device should be /dev/input/mice.

If you cat that file, and move the mouse, do you get anything on your screen? You should, if USB is set up properly.

Silly question: do you have your USB host controller module loaded? It's usb-uhci for Via and Intel USB 1.x ports, usb-ehci for any USB 2 port, and usb-ohci for non-Intel non-Via USB 1.x ports.

bwkaz,

I don't think this is the problem, but might it be a question of having to add a "SendCoreEvents" directive in the "ServerLayout" section of the config file, or does this happen implicitly for the designated Core device?

bwkaz
04-08-2004, 09:31 PM
Yeah, I'm fairly sure that the core pointer always sends core events. If there was another mouse device (another Section InputDevice, basically), then yes, it might need that option...

DMR
04-09-2004, 07:38 PM
Thanks.

I was pretty sure that was the case; just wanted to verify. I'm also pretty sure the real problem is one or two layers down from event sending/notification- I was just shooting in the dark in hopes that I might hear a "groan" and a "thud". :D

"You have shot the grue." kind of thing then?

:D

(I'd still like to know if /dev/input/mice is spitting out any data when the mouse gets moved... but I'm guessing it's the case that [-dYNAmaX111-] just hasn't read this thread since the last time they posted.)

Hehe, LOL guys, i thought this would happen (coming back and there doing heeps of replys to reply to :P) i have been away for easter (happy easter everyone). I thought i would just use psx for now until i get everything else sorted out because i just recieved a motherboard ram and cpu. And the motherboard is usb 2 which is different so i thought i would wait till then. Now i have got it have am having a few other issues. I cant load any modules on kernel version 2.6.5. When i go to lsmod i an error something like this

QM_MODULES: not being installed or something long those lines.

Also when i go to startx i get a different error about unable to start monitor while trying to load vgahw after loading the nvidia drivers.

then its probably connected with your module compilation on your present kernel...switch your configs back to "vesa" until you get a new proper kernel built, unless you have a standby 2.4 thats will contains the nvidia module?

04-11-2004, 10:43 AM
OK, 2.6 isn't working at all yet because i get that QM_MODULES error. 2.4 which i am runnin now is just running the standard nv drivers. Before i was able to load the nvidia driver but i had problems with my mouse, now that i have fix that another error has come along which i dont know how it got there.

ok, i have update module-init-tools. i did depmod and i just gave me unresolved sybolics for to turn card which arnt a priority at the moment. Now what show i do. DO i need to compile some in the kernel?

JohnT
04-11-2004, 04:58 PM
yea, I would try to use my 2.4 old.config if that gave you no problems ...make sure you have installed the new module tools correctly...the version I am using is 3.0, I believe it is the newest now. Get a correctly working 2.4 before you move back to work on your 2.6

Here's another kernel rebuilding synopsis, that might cover some points you may have missed.
