sound and X

when i'm on the console, i can play any sound but if i startx and try to do the same thing i get can't open /dev/dsp

ps: i'm running slackware 8 and using the mad16 module.

What programs are you trying to get sound in? I know that sometimes you have to be running esd or OSS in order to get sound, like in XMMS.

I've gotten aRTs (http://www.arts-project.org) quite nicely on my sound card and even have esd running through it (using artsdsp), so if something has support for esd, but not artsd, that's not a problem since esd is running through artsd (of course, there's more overhead, but it's negligeable.)

The artsdsp utility is nice since it makes almost any application that supports only OSS or /dev/dsp work under artsd. Of course, I can't guarantee that this will work for you, but it's a shot.
