i am familiar with most of the popular linux distros, you know, who they are aimed at, what they consist of, and all of that stuff. i'm wondering, why would i want to use freeBSD? what advantages would it have over, say, my current gentoo system?

I think that second link is a bit biased, I remember reading it a while ago (and I skimmed it again just now, he even admits he is) ..
I suggest trying both out :)
Both are good, I think they fill a different niche though.

the second may be more biased in his stated oppinions but he does a much much better job of explaining the difference and target markets of each, the first does not and was removed, keep in mind his oppinions are his, and use the article wisely and it should explain all the questions you had in relation to the subject

You should give it a try.
FreeSBIE is pretty good. Its like knoppix and even lets you do an hd-install w/o any hassles.
