I have an XP system, in sig, dual booted w/ Fedora. So, I already have my patition and stuff. I see from reading the Documentation @ Gentoo.org, that I will need to do a bit of elementary fdisk-ing, but I can handle that I think. Besides backing up (DURF!) is there anything I should know before I go along with this shing-ding?
Also: For a Stage-1 install, how long does it take for MAXIMUM customization?

Read, print, and understand the entire install doc _before_ you start the install. Also, if you can, connect to #gentoo on freenode in irc on another computer in case you have questions during the install.

It takes until it is done... totally dependant on your hardware. At least a half to three quarters of a day to a base system... base meaning no X installed.

But the installation can be paused, so to speak, so I can turn off the PC, load into Windows if I want, etc., correct?
yes
but still - have a hard copy of the install docs
if you don't you will fail.

Whats up Kypen!
Ya, defiantly print the installation guide that gentoo has on their website.
When I installed gentoo, the longest part of the installation was compiling KDE and all of its dependencies, but thats after the base system is installed.

Did anyone mention that you should print out the guide and READ THE ENTIRE DOCUMENT before proceeding?
Keep it on your lap throughout the procedure.
It'll take about 24 hours to X.

Yo Pez!
Anyone done this w/ the new 2.6 kernel? I wanna do it simply so I don't have to recompile later. The guide seems updated for 2.6, but I'm wondering if more problems seem to arise with this.
EDIT: Doh! Sorry gehidore! How was the install? Any hangups or anything due to 2.6?

One last question:
Is it possible to have both KDE and Gnome installed? I like utilities from both...

yes you can
just
emerge kde gnome
or seperately
emerge kde && emerge gnome
you can customize the kde install gentoo desktop conf guide (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/desktop.xml) but as far as i know you cant do the same with gnome just emerge gnome

Yep. It'll just take longer to compile than if you just emerged one or the other.
