My buddy is thinking of installing Mandrake 8.1, but he wants to insure he can get his cable modem going. Any online doc's concerning this? Any help is appreciated.

It can't be any easier on Mandrake. During install chose cable (or whatever they call it) and then enter the pertinent data. It is just like setting it up in Windows or Mac OS.
Your friend just needs to be sure that he has all his necessary IP info.
Oh and he should know if it is a DCHP or BootP connection (likely DCHP).
