Hi,

I was thinking of getting a dell inspiron 4100. I was wondering if anyone has had success in installing RH7.2 on such a modol?
Will RH support it's hardware - integrated nic, video card, sound, etc?

thanx,

I really prefer the Lattitudes, but I've put several distros on a older Inspiron no problems, same with the Lattitudes.

Inspiron 4000: (couldn't find a 4100 listed)

I think DELL will install Red Hat for you if you order it that way.

Good Luck,

J-Tek,

Dell is pretty good at including hardware that works with Linux. You should double check to make sure. A few years ago a friend of mine bought a Dell and tried to install linux. Some of his hardware was not compatable (winmodem?) so Dell sent him some new stuff for free.

However, If your notebook comes with XP on it, then Dell will only support XP on your computer (double check to make sure). Getting them to answer your linux questions will cost you a pretty penny ($150 + an hour). At least that's what they were charging a while ago.

It's good to call Dell and talk to a salesperson there. They are pretty informative. But no matter what they say, you will only get support on the OS your computer is shipped with.
