If you update the kernel will the programs that you had before still run? Or do you have to reinstall(recompile) them? Thanks.

99.9% of your programs will be fine
if your going from 2.2 to 2.4 kernel things like modutils will need to be upgraded and you will prolly want to install iptables package it repleaces ipchains in the 2.2 kernels. but as for normal software like netscape/gnome/xchat that type of stuff they will remain fine
