Okay, I so love Linux. I'm a first time user and have found myself addicted. I also love this little program called KMail. However, I'm using COX high speed internet as my ISP, my email settings are as follows...
outgoing: pop.west.cox.net
incoming: smtp.west.cox.net
using these settings, as well as my login and password seem to allow me to RECIEVE email in Kmail but I can not SEND mail. I click SEND and IMMEDIATELY I get the error saying that some messaged failed to send. However, setting up Evolution or any other program with the exact same settings has no problems at all.
Being a first time user, I don't know how to get more detailed information on that error.
Any thoughts? Thanks.

Yeah I had the same problems with Kmail. Worked alright in evolution and thunderbird.
Instead you might want to use SENDMAIL to send your email.

Does COX use SMTP authentication for sending email? Mine does (Rogers) and I need to enable SMTP authentication in Kmail.

I'm actually having the same issue here. I did try turning on authentication, but to no avail. Don't most mail clients do pop-before-smtp authentication? That could be an issue..

In KMail you have to set up an incoming (pop) and an outgoing (smtp) server, just like with Evolution, Mozilla mail, etc., but doing so isn't as "user" friendly as those programs. They have really done a much better job with this in KMail that comes bundled with KDE 3.2.1 (I think it's 1.6.1) but with earlier versions, if I remember right you had to kind of hunt around (or maybe it was just my ineptness showing :D) for the place to actually set up the outgoing server.
Also, if you are using Slackware the default is sendmail, so you don't have to set up an smtp deal at all.

Also, shouldn't that be just the opposite? Isn't pop incoming and smtp outgoing?

You certainly are correct. I didn't even notice myself. :(

Whoops. That was a typ-o on my part. I have the POP and SMTP settings correct. Since I started this thread I found answers on other message boards. It is an acknowledged bug in KMAIL.
Don't know whether you've quite the same problem I had - if like myself you've more than one account go to Configure KMail and under Network, Sending move the cox.net outgoing account up the list to the default position. It worked for me but I still don't know why - hope this is useful.
